"So you won't take a chance? You'll give up something wonderful so you can be safe but never happy?"
"God, you sound just like . . ." She sighed and shrugged. "Maybe I don't have the guts. You don't understand all the fears and the insecurities in my screwed-up little mind. You don't know what you're getting into, McCall."
He let go of her hands to clasp her upper arms tightly. He'd had enough of her I-don't-believe-in-love nonsense. They both could have been killed today. The time for prevaricating was past; the time for truth at hand. He gave her a little shake, hoping to joggle some sense into her. "Don't call me 'McCall.' I know you're trying to push me away when you do that, and it won't work. I'm here to stay. I know more about screwed-up minds than you think. Yours isn't so badwhen compared to my own."
He could see the hope flickering in her eyes, the desire hovering on her lips. They could have so much if she'd only just believe.
She smiled, and his heart turned over with love. When she smiled just so she looked like an angel. Chris released her arms. One hand reached out and cupped her cheek in his palm.
She closed her eyes and turned her mouth toward his hand. Her lips touched the softer skin at the center; then her tongue flicked out and tasted him. The caress made him catch his breath
